In 140 words or less, tell us a little about you.
We are best friends who are as different as they come-Donna’s a married city dweller who loves camping and sports, Virginia is single in the suburbs and thinks roughing it is a hotel w/o 24 hour room service. But we embrace each other’s differences rather than try to change each other.
We love what we do and both see life as a great adventure and are always looking for what’s around the next corner.
In 1990 our first novel, Exposures, was published but 1997′s TRYIN’ TO SLEEP IN THE BED YOU MADE really launched our writing career. Tryin’ was an Essence Bestseller for over a year and won the Merit Award for Fiction from the Black Caucus of the American Library Association. Far From the Tree, Better Than I Know Myself and Gotta Keep on Tryin’, were also bestsellers.
In 140 words or less, tell us why What Doesn’t Kill You would make a great addition to our personal library.
What Doesn’t Kill You is a funny take on a serious subject and a great antidote for all of us who are dealing with today’s economic roller coaster.
Opinionated, straight-talking, and witty, Tee is a fly forty-something everywoman. Divorced since her daughter was young, Tee has been “handling her business,” since her would-be songwriter husband took off for L.A., and she’s done all right. Hardworking, and loyal, Tee went from being the first employee of a start-up purveyor of organic lotions to the right-hand of the president of a major player in the home and personal fragrance market.
But everything changes when Tee is out placed and doesn’t tell anyone.
Deep in denial, she continues her life as if nothing has changed. After series of financial mistakes and missteps, she’s soon teetering on the edge of bankruptcy. That’s when Tee has to wake up and face reality.
What are your writing goals?
To complete the new book, Uptown, and to continue growing in the craft of writing-that’s enough for the moment!
What are your reading goals?
We’d each like to have more time for reading-but our schedule is so crammed that we don’t get to read as much as we’d like.
Name one thing you would like to do differently this year.
Be better stewards of our time.
Name one person (who you don’t normally see) that you would like to see or be in contact with more often this year.
VDB-my friend Myra in NC
DG-Ruth, my friend from college. She lives in Portland, OR now which cuts way down on the hanging out time.
How did you celebrate President-Elect Barack Obama’s inauguration?
We were in Washington with family and friends celebrating along with the millions of others who descended on the nation’s capital.
What was the last nice thing you said to someone?
Thank you.
What was the last nice thing someone said to you?
Be safe.
What’s the nicest thing a reader has ever said to you about your book?
We have been fortunate enough to have readers say amazing things to us about our books for many years, but one of the most recent was that Tryin’ changed their life-and they had gone from prison to being a PhD candidate.
What’s your favorite saying/quote?
Life is what you make it.

Just finished reading and reviewing Gotta Keep On Tryin’. Loved it. I first read these authors years ago but then I “lost touch”. I’m glad to be reacquainted and can’t wait to read their latest.
