When it comes to using APOOO as a vessel to ‘promote our voices, and showcase our stories,’ I heart what I do. Spreading the word about African-American literature is my passion. But some days even my passion can become overwhelming when unexpected issues and cantankerous folks try to invade my space. And, sometimes it just feels good to be acknowledged and cited for what I’m doing…to feel that I’m making a difference. So to hear Jewel Parker Rhodes call me a griot and to receive the email below from author Sammie Ward who’s watched me from afar…well it felt good.
Yasmin is truly a woman to get to know. She was a blessing in helping me promote my work on APOOO. But she is so right about authors over looking the local organizations. I remember when I self-published my first novel “In The Name of Love” I was working at the Bethesda Naval Hospital. When word got out that one of their own has written a book, it was amazing the show of love and support I received from them and in the news. Come to find out their were book club members at the hospital. I also received a contract, where I had a book signing monthly at the Navy Exchange, and the Navy Magazine did not one but two articles. I also did some radio interviews online. The point is I sold books locally as well out of the area book signing. Writing the book is just the first step. Ladies you have to promote, promote, and promote. Regardless of whether the book is in print or e-book.

And, let’s not forget about the author’s who appreciate the support APOOO gives them by reviewing their books and our word of mouth when we read a good book. Big shout out to author and new mom, Maryam Diaab!
