In The Nude by C. Alexandra Allen is a plate full of wholesome poetry with just enough space to let readers interpret what is written. Allen delves into the realness of inequality, the depths of love, and the prospects of change with as much fluidity as the most nimble dancer.

One of my favorite poems of the collection is called Beatsandrhymes where Allen writes:

dear hip-hop

you came when brothers around the way needed

something to believe in

someone besides God to tell their woes to

someone besides their woman to bare their souls to…

Those who indulge in hip-hip will surely relate to Beatsandrhymes in its entirety. And the message is surely not missed in Goodbye to the Life of Yesterday, where she pays homage to survivors of abuse:

This moment is not about what you think I am

nor how you define me.

It is about settling into the comfort of me,

my right to be whole,

reassembling the heart, mind and soul you stole.

Upon completing In the Nude, readers will be full of hope, helpfulness, and reflection. I applaud Allen for creating a book of poetry that many will be able to relate to. She is definitely a poet to watch. I recommend In the Nude to all lovers of poetry.
