ANOTHER PART OF ME by Nazirah Mottenon is a story of two very different young women and best friends. Dana West is a sexy around-the-way girl. The type of girl that seems to have it together, she has a nice car, designer clothes, and a nice apartment in a decent neighborhood. The only thing is she is still suffering from the loss of her mother and the fact that she does not know who her father is. This leaves her literally without much family. The one man that she was in love with cheated on her, leaving her heartbroken and lonely. So in turn, she does the ultimate payback to him, but in truth it only makes her look like a fool. Will she learn, before it is too late, that happiness does not come in the form of being with a man just to have a man?

Shawn Thomas is Dana’s best friend. She is a single mother trying to raise her son the best way she can and refuses to get on public assistance. Instead she does the best with the little she has, by working hard at any job she can get. Shawn admires Dana’s life, because it seems as if she has no worries or any real responsibilities like she does. Every time she seems to get caught up on the bills more debt piles up and she takes a few steps back trying to catch up. This makes Shawn more and more frustrated. With her parents and sister on her back, telling her what she should be doing with her life, Shawn is down on herself and life. She even begins to have suicidal thoughts. Will she be able to get out of her depression and see that just around the corner happiness is waiting for her?

ANOTHER PART OF ME by Nazirah Mottenon was an exceptional debut novel. It was a little difficult to read in the beginning because the author kept switching back and forth between first and third person, and in some spots the story reads like a diary and then switches back over into story mode. Other than that, the story was a true-to-life novel that readers are sure to recognize as a part of themselves or someone that they know.
