The inauguration of Barack H. Obama overshadowed everything this week for me. No need to even trip. As I write this, I still have a freakin’ Happy Headache.
You could FEEL the energy resonating throughout the country on Tuesday. The sights and sounds will stay with me for the rest of my days. I watched everything streaming live on the Internet, as well as television network coverage. I was tweeting, texting, Facebooking, and talking on the phone right up to and immediately after the swearing-in ceremony.
But once things got underway, Diva In Training and I sat arm-in-arm and watched history being made. My baby girl didn’t get my tears. She said that I had always told her she could do/be anything she wanted, and that President Obama’s mother had told him the same. She believes that the only person who can get in your way is you- because she has gotten most of what she has gone after in her short life.
She understands social injustice and racism from a historical perspective, not from experience. She didn’t understand the magnitude of the day. For her it was simple- her candidate is now President because more Americans agreed with her assessment of his character and his ability to lead than did not. Obama’s color was never an issue for her (although I suspect his level of “coolness” was- she has rated him highly on that particular scale). What mattered to her was that he seems to care. That’s it.
So, while I was sitting there with my daughter, I reveled in the joy and the fact that even though my child never doubted my words, on January 20th, 2009, an African American became the leader of the Free World and proved to ME that I can do anything I choose.
Just in case I needed a reminder.

Great message. Now it’s even easier to believe. I’ve been telling my now 8yo son that he can one day be the first African American President of the United States. Now that spot has been filled, he will have to accept that he can one day simple be President.
All our goals, dreams, and aspirations are reachable if we simply believe and strive. D.I.T has it so right only one person can keep you from it. Look in the mirror and that person will stare you in the eye and dare you to dream.

Nice reflection
I just couldn’t get enough. Still can’t. I am still on high. It was great to share it with your daughter. I shared it with mine at my sister’s sipping mimosas, rejoicing, crying, taking it all in.
