Poison by Tia Hines is the story of Desire Jones, a 13 year-old that contracts AIDS. Now, Desire is a spit-fire teen who has suffered a great deal in a short period of time. From her mother abandoning her to living with her abusive aunt and uncle, poor Desire cannot seem to catch a break. That is until her best friend, Jennifer, becomes her only escape. But when the unthinkable happens at Jennifer’s house, Desire is shattered and left alone once again.
In school she is the butt of all jokes until Greg comes to her rescue. Desire is your average hard-headed teen; she is not focused on school and the only thing that appears interesting to her at this time is boys. When the beatings from her aunt do not stop, she runs away and lives from place to place until she meets the love of her life, who unfortunately gives her AIDS. Dropping out of school, while searching for her father, Desire becomes pregnant and gets shipped away so as not to shame the family. Can she do right by her baby when no one seems to take the time to care and nurture her?
In denial and refusing to do the right thing, Desire is on a mission to infect as many people as possible, men or women. She walks around handing out death certificates to any and everyone who she comes in contact with, from blood sisters while in the penitentiary to various sex partners and even those who have raped her before. Can she be stopped? Will death grab her before one of these people find out what they have gotten from her? Poison by Tia Hines is a must read. This fast-paced, action-packed book will grab you by the heart and make you feel Desires’ every pain. I recommend this book to readers of all genres’ and especially to our youth.
