Pray for Haiti by Rambling Raven
Upon learning, last Tuesday, that a catastrophic earthquake hit Haiti, all I could do was close my eyes and pray. Those first images of the devastated island nation left me weakened with sadness. It was a sharp reminder of the floods that ravished New Orleans. However, with regards to Haiti there was a greater sense of devastation. Where will the help come from? Where were the Haitians going to be evacuated to? Unlike the United States, Haiti can not help itself. It is a nation ravaged by extreme poverty, disease and corruption. The Haitian government is ill equipped to help rescue its own citizens. All the help that Haiti needs must come from foreign governments and agencies.
I watched stunned as images of distraught Haitians tried to pull family and friends from underneath the rubbish that the quake left behind. I watched with sadness as images of battered and dead Haitian bodies littered the streets of Porte-au-Prince, while thousands more were still trapped underneath the walls of buildings. I silently prayed as I learned of all the countries that were galvanizing forces to go to the island to help with rescue efforts, I could only imagine the helplessness those within Haiti must have been feeling. Once again all I could do was pray for Haiti.
Once charities for the nation were set up I immediately called the American Red Cross and made a donation. My school immediately began fundraising for the victims of the earthquake. I went grocery shopping and gave extra money at the register towards their Haitian relief funds. Yet, I still prayed.
I pray for Haiti because I know that no amount of money will ease the pain and suffering many of the families face. I know that makeshift hospitals will help heal the body but it won’t heal the soul of that nation. Life was so very fragile in Haiti long before the earthquake hit. Now the nation is only surviving by a thread. And their continual lifeline must come from those far beyond the Haitian borders.
Now is not the time for politics or prejudice. Now is the time for humanity to step forward and reach out to Haiti. After all, they are part of us, this human race. And but for the grace of God that very well could be anyone of us needing a lifeline. Money will help no doubt, but let us not forget that prayer works as well. Donate what you can but don’t forget to pray for Haiti and its future.
