Hey hey APOOO Challengers! Welcome to week 10 of the First Quarter 2009 Reading Challenge. Only three more weeks left. Are you still on track? Every one who completes the Challenge by reading the books on their original list will receive a personalized bookmark and be entered into a drawing to win a $25 gift certificate to amazon.com. Will you be in the running? So, what did you read last week (from your list) and what do you plan to read this week?
Last week, I read That Devil’s No Friend of Mind by JD Mason. That Bishop was a manipulative and controlling mo-fo and he died too quickly for me to find out what made him tick…but those he left in his wake…let’s just say they were ALL some twisted characters including his daughter and business partner. That Devil’s No Friend of Mine is the April BOM for APOOO and I recommend it to fans of Mason as well as those who are looking for a well-written and creatively crafted storyline. But, if you’re new to Mason, I also recommend you read her earlier reads, starting with And on the Eighth Day She Rested. I feel in love with Mason after reading this book and have read every book written by her since then. How many authors can you say that about?
Here’s my thirteen books for the First Quarter 2009 Reading List with updates:
The Air Between Us by Deborah Johnson–COMPLETED; Week 9 Read.
The Black Girl Next Door by Jennifer Baszille

I was going really goood, 4 more books to read but now I have burnout and don’t feel like reading at all. If I listen to audio books does that count? LOL
LOL…yep audio books count.
I’m pretty much on track. I have surpassed the 13 mark but I will need to look at my blog to determine how many of those books were challenge books.

That list, that list, that list…
Oh Lawd.
Actually, I’m doing better with the original list than I thought: I read 5 so far and got two more to read, but I don’t think I’m-a make it in the next three weeks. I made a crap load of substitutions when my ADHD kicked in and other books came up which looked more exciting.
ANYwho…
i just finished up Human Trial by Timothy N Stelly Sr.
A well written, well thought out book with plenty of social, religious and racial commentary intersperesed within the dialogue, I give it four stars.
It was about an alien attack on the Earth in which microwave radiation was used. The temperature soared to over 100 degrees daily and most human’s dropped dead on the spot, but a small pocket of survivors bands together a tries to create a new society.
Then the aliens reverse the attack and it gets brutally cold.
I’m supposed to be reading Murder On The Down Low right now but I picked up Daughter Denied by Alreatha Thomas instead. It’s about a decade in the life of Tina, who’s seven when the book starts out. Her mother Earnestine is a heroin addict and her stepfather Brother Floyd is a physically abusive man who is in jail more than he’s out. Tina’s entire family is light skinned, except her, and she feels she doesn’t fit in. If you know anything about my book This Ain’t No Hearts and Flowers Love Story then you know why Daughter Denied is so appealing to me. So far I’m enjoying the book.
Now as for that list…
1. BACK STABBERS by Nyema
Won’t get there. I’m reading Daughter Denied instead
2. Where There’s Smoke by Terra Little
Read last week. Excellent read, 5 stars
3. Born in the Streets but Raised in Prison by Tra Verdejo
Loved it. Had an undeniable authenticity to it. 5 stars
4. Shameless Hoodwives by Meesha Mink & De’Nesha Diamond
You know ’bout me and them Hoodwives. 5 stars
5. The Hood Life by same
The same indeed. See above
6. Keep the Faith by Faith Evans
Probably week 12
7. The Best of Everything by Kimberla Lawson Roby
Read The Best Kept Secret instead. Didn’t care for it. 3 stars
8. Half of the Battle is to Surrender All I Have by Adrienna ‘Deo’ Turner
I’m confidant I’m gonna fit this in
9. Murder on the Down Low by Pamela Samuels Young
Next week for sure
10. What If It Feels Good by DJ McLaurin
I still might get to this one
11. Blackbirds Pt 1 by Andre Coleman
I really wanted to read this. Don’t know what happened.
12. Mpire: Death Cometh by TL James (my girl)
So hot yet very disturbing. TL avoided the editing issues that plagued the first book in this series. I can’t wait for the next one. 4 stars
13. Madam Eve by Eddrick Dejuan
I don’t wanna be Mean but BOY this was horrible. I couldn’t finish it. I wanted my money back and I got it for FREE. I read Idoleyes by Mandisa instead. Very inspirational, by a singer I’ve admired since American Idol. This was right on time because of what I was going through. 4 stars
I read 11 books for the challenge so far. I have two more to go, but JD Mason’s book does not come out until next week and I must check my list. I know I subsituted Bertice Berry book, I don’t know it’s not appealing to me so I read the Someday Lisst instead. Can’t remember my 13th book.
OK, I’m almost finished with She Had It Coming and Just Too Good To Be True, which will leave me with 20 days to read 4 books! It’s getting harder and harder, but I am trying to stay true to my challenge books, which most have been on my TBR list for far too long! LOL! This has indeed been a challenge for me, and I love it!
Donnica,
Let me know what you think about Steve Harvey’s book? I loved it!

6.) One Taste – Allison Hobbs – finished

13.) What Doesn’t Kill You – DeBerry and Grant
14.) The Million Dollar Deception – finished
15.) The Bishop’s Daughter – finished
16.) We Take This Man – finished
During the last week I have finished; We Take this man and When A Man Loves A Woman, I am currently reading Suicide Diaries. Please everyone keep my family in prayer as we have been going through for the past two weeks. We buried an Aunt last week, My oldest son lost his grandfather on last Saturday and my granfather has been in a sedated coma since last Friday. I’ve had plenty of reading time, because those waiting hours in the ICU Family waiting room have been plenty.
I again had a slow week. I am reading After the Lies and The Things We Do for Love. They are both on my list. I think that is 7 from my original list and these will bring it to 9. Most of what is left is romance, so I know they will be quick reads.
