  12. Hi -

While I have not posted since week 1 – I have been reading at least one book a week – Now am I keeping to my original 13 is the question.

Week 2 – Crossing the Continent – was my historical fix for this challenge. The subtitle is The Story of the First African-American Explorer of the American South. This is a story of an African American slave Estaban Dorantes who when a team of Spaniards was left stranded in the southwest – navigated them through the Indian tribes and eventually they re-connected with the Spanish in Mexico. The author’s main premise is that history is the story that favors the one who is writting it and since there was no one to tell Estaben’s story – he felt we needed to understand the full story.

Week 3 – The Wasted Vigil was not on my original 13 list but I was not feeling my original read for this week. I love reading cross cultural books especially if they have an element of history to it. This story takes place in modern day Afganistan and the characters are connected by “six degrees of separation” but most do not know this and at first neither does the reader. But the author does a wonderful job of telling this story – peeling back the layers. This will be one of my top reads for 2009.

Week 4 – Blonde Roots – At first I did not know what to expect from this book as the Romantic Times Magazine gave it 4 1/2 stars as a sci fi book yet my reading looked like it wasHF woth a twist as the story is about an English girl who is enslaved and brought to a land where Africans are in charge. But the book was more than that – it was really a satire on our cultural assumptions and always people to examine how they think of others who are different that they are

Week 5 – The More Things Change – This is a sequel book and it once again reminded me how hard it is for a sequel to live up to the first book especially if you enjoyed it.

  13. Gotta find mine and list them. I am going through my TBR pile. I think if I reduce it, it will be better however, I have not received my copy of The Red Tent yet.

  14. This week I finished In Love with a Younger Man and Dying for Revenge. Next up is Bring on teh Blessings by Beverly Jenkins

  15. I’m with you, Yas! I took a break this week since I was ahead, and read I Promise by Adrienne Byrd, which was not on my challenge list, but on my TBR list. It was a good romance, and I love Adrienne’s writing, so it was a great diversion! This week, I plan to finish The Best of Everything by Kimberla Lawson Roby and start The Bishop’s Daughter, and then get back to my list! I’ll check in later on this week!

  16. 1. The S.W.A.P. Game by Brian W Smith completed first week
    2. Up Pops the Devil by Angela Benson completed third week
    3. Neglected Souls by RIchard Jeanty completed second week
    4. The Song Yet Sung by James McBride – in progress
    5. Revenge is Best Served Cold by Danita Carter and Tracie Howard – completed fourth week
    6. The Bishop’s Daughter by Tiffany L Warren
    7. The Best of Everything by Kimberla Lawson Roby will start in the next day or so
    8. The Making of Isaac Hunt by Linda Leigh Hargrove
    9. Just Too Good to be True by E Lynn Harris
    10. Going Down South by Bonnie Glover
    11. The Sunday Brunch Diaries by Norma L Jarrett

I still have to add two more books. I have had a few issues to deal with over the past week and it has really thrown me behind. I plan to get back on the bandwagon.

  17. Completed book nine- GHETTO RESUME by Freddie Simmons also one of OOSA’s Jan. reads. I liked that it started off differently, but, the more I read, the harder it became to believe what the author was writing. I believe that some readers will enjoy the story, I’m just not one of them. I’ve also been able to get in some ME reading which was becoming a challenge within itself. I’m currently reading IN FIRM PURSUIT I know that it’s been out for sometime, which is why I’m happy I have the time now to do this type of reading. ;-)

    13) Never Say Diet by Chantal Hobbs — replaced by The 4-Day Diet by Dr. Ian K. Smith; completed week 1

I’m halfway there. Just finished Midnight. I know reviews on this one was mixed but I really enjoyed it. Didn’t really know what to expect since I didn’t read The Coldest Winter but the book was very well-written with an engaging storyline and complex, intriguing characters. My only complaints are that it’s too sexually explicit for my 13 yo, who is dying to get his hands on the book, and it ends with a cliffhangar that seemed completely out of place. Guess there’s going to be a sequel.

Planned to read Scrapping Plans next but my head wasn’t ready. So I’m reading Debra Webb’s Find Me, a romantic suspense which is trying to keep me up at night.

Just finished reading “The Evil Side of Money” I & II which is a total of 9 books I’ve read off of my Reading Challenge List. The two books were both good reads and the author left me hanging so I’m assuming there will be a Part 3.

  29. Wow Tangerine…you’re getting your read on! Good for you.

  30. BDC–look forward to hearing your thoughts on The Hood Life and understand where you’re coming from regarding the Best of Everything.

  31. Better on Top was great! Nick was a sweetheart and getting Toni to realize that and move on from the past was quite a challenge. The book holds you until the very last page.
