Hey hey APOOO Challengers! Welcome to week eight of the First Quarter 2009 Reading Challenge. Are you still hanging with us…we’re more than halfway there. So, what did you read last week (from your list) and what do you plan to read this week?
Last week, I read The Ties That Bind by Bertice Berry. I don’t have much to say about this that Phyllis hasn’t already said in her review. Memoirs are hit-or-miss with me; this one was in neutral territory. It was just okay. I like Berry’s writing style and her words of wisdom but this book felt redundant at times and as though I had heard it all before. It wasn’t really a fresh or original read for me. But, as I always say, don’t take my word for it. READ IT FOR YOURSELF. LOL.
Here’s my thirteen books for the First Quarter 2009 Reading List with updates:
The Air Between Us by Deborah Johnson
The Black Girl Next Door by Jennifer Baszille
The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao
Deadly Charm by Claudia Mair–Completed: Week Seven Read
In Love with a Younger Man by Cheryl Robinson–Completed; Week Three Read
The Island of Eternal Love by Daina Chaviano
Schae’s Story by Angelia Menchan–Completed;Week One Read
Someone Knows My Name by Lawrence Hill
That Devil’s No Friend of Mine by J. D. Mason
The Ties that Bind by Bertice Berry; Completed, Week Eight Read
What Doesn’t Kill You by Virginia DeBerry and Donna Grant; Completed, Week Four Read
Where the Lines Bleed by Jesmyn Ward; Completed, Week Two Read
Where There’s Smoke by Terra Little; Completed, Week Six Read
This week I hope to finish The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao. Will be back next week to discuss. Now, your turn. Leave a comment below to let us know what you read last week and what you plan to read this week.

Hey Jennifer I’ve also read more than 13 books…like about 25 now…but I’m trying to stay true to the list…that makes it more of a challenge…hehe. Also, I’ve read all of the books on your upcoming list except one…and for the most part I enjoyed all of them.
Detoured off my list to read some review books so still 4 of the original list left. But I’ve completed my 13 for the quarter.
Finished Dangerous Prey by Lindsay McKenna. Book could have been 100 pages shorter and I might have really enjoyed it. It was a category romance stretched into a single title.
But then I read What Doesn’t Kill You by Virginia DeBerry and Donna Grant. These ladies get me! Maybe it’s the NY thing, the forty-something thing, the mother thing…I don’t know. Anyway, I loved this book.
Now I’m reading Hot Girl, the debut YA novel by Dream Jordan. After that I’ll go back to my list, I think. Never know for sure until I open that next book.
PatriciaW´s last blog post..Black Christian Fiction on Parade: Derek Jackson
Jennifer, you’re going to be in reader heaven because the 4 you have left to read are all good reads. I couldn’t even recommend a reading order because it won’t matter.

I read 1.5 books.
Tall, Dark Westmoreland (not on the list)
Fledgling this is the .5 I am 1/2 way through
I think I have 5 left from my list to read. I strayed a few times.

Patricia, you are making me want to lock myself in a closet or drive my car and park somewhere and get my reading on. All the people in my house is sick, maybe I will give them all cold medicine to put them to sleep for the weekend. Just kidding. LOL

Been reading a whole lot however I am unable to blog at work anymore so it’s hard for me to get on to post. I have access at home however I am running from sun up to sun down, once I leave work, life is on the move for me. However during my evening travels and responsibilities there is a lot of wait time. Waiting for my daughter to get done dance class or awaiting her and my son to finish drill practice. Whatever the case maybe I still have time for my books.
Hey Everyone,
This past week, I read Tale of a Train Wreck Lifestyle by Crystal Lacey Winslow. It was a good one, and I finished it in one day, because I just had to find out what happened! LOL!
I have finished 7 books from the challenge so far! This week, I plan to finish Essense of Desire by Brenda Jackson and The Bishop’s Daughter by Tiffany Warren!
Currently reading:
Song Yet Sung by James McBride (I could finish if I wouldn’t get sidetracked)
The Sunda Brunch Diaries by Norma L Jarrett
Have completed:
The S.W.A.P. Game by Brian W Smith
Up Pops the Devil by Angela Benson
Neglected Souls by Richard Jeanty
Revenge is Best Served Cold by Danita Carter and Tracie Howard
The Bishop’s Daughter by Tiffany L Warren
The Best of Everything by Kimberla Lawson Roby
A Taste of Reality by Kimberla Lawson Roby
The Making of Isaac Hunt by Linda Leigh Hargrove
Just Too Good to be True by E Lynn Harris
Lashanda how was The Bishops Daughter? I have that book in my TBR pile
I give..I’ll try next quarter. I have too much going on right now. Im reading a nonfiction called off the Books by Sudhir Alladi Venkatesh about the Underground Economy of the Urban Poor
Dang…I shoulda joined the challenge. I’ve read about thirty books since the beginning of the year, but my problem is I never know in advance what I plan on reading. I’m one of those dangerous people who stop by a bookstore with the intent of picking up a magazine or something and leaving with 5 books.
But . . . even though I didn’t get down with the First Quarter Reading Challenge, will I be able to get down with the Second?
Or do I go ahead and joing the First Quarter Challenge now? And if so, how would I do so?
Karen
P. S. Sorry to be so late and so dumb!
Ms Mary,
I enjoyed The Bishops’s Daughter. It was a great read that I just couldn’t put down. I won’t give any of the details away but I do know you will enjoy it.
Yas,
Where do you find the time to read all of these books? You always seem so busy! LOL
Jessica…LOL. On average, I can read a couple of books a week…as long as I don’t spend all of my time online…so I’m trying to spend more time reading and less time surfing the ‘net. So far…so good.
I completed my 13th book which was Like A Good Neighbor by Dwayne Murray Sr.
