Reflections of a Mississippi Magnolia is the author Patricia Neely-Dorsey’s life in poems written in a span of six-months. It is a reflection on southern life, country living, childhood memories, family and personal issues through poetry.

Patricia Neely-Dorsey states “that there are many negative connotations associated with Mississippi and the south in general. I want to show a flip side of the coin. There is much to love about this much aligned and misunderstood part of our country.”

SOUNDS OF SUMMER

Chirping of the crickets,
Buzzing of the bees,
Bullfrogs croaking in the pond,
Birds singing in the trees,
There are sounds of summer
That we all wait to hear;
It’s part of what’s so wonderful
About that time of year.

ALTON ODESSA KILGORE

I never knew my grandfather Alton,
But I ‘m told he was a very smart man.
Everyone called him professor;
And of learning, he was quite a big fan.
His parents sent him off to college,
And he was the principal of a one room school,
He taught the children lovingly,
And he laid down all the rules.
He was my mother’s father,
And the father of seven more;
He produced a family of very bright kids,
All with the name Kilgore.

The poems were very simple and truely her reflection of life in the Mississippi. This poetry book would probably appeal to young adults and folks raised in Mississippi, who would like to stroll down memory lane. Reading poetry is a personal experience, and oftentimes one has to read poems on their own in order to understand them. I recommend those who enjoy poetry to give this book a chance as you might find a few poems that really speak to you.
