What would you do if you were told that your future is in the hands of someone only heard about through prophecies and folklore? If you were an Uche, you would believe and pray to EL that the one they call Mkombozi would be born soon and deliver you from hardship and slavery. No one knew when this savior would come or who would be his mother; because of this the king of the Oti people had the children killed. The Revelation Gate by Brian L. Thompson is the journey of an entire nation. This nation placed their fate in one man coming to enter the Revelation Gate, and invoking a change.
It was not until the last holy rain, Isoke, second wife to Aitan, and a woman with a blood condition that caused her husband to never touch her in an intimate manner, became pregnant with Chimelu. She put her life on the line and others as well to keep her son from being killed. At first, Aitan believed Isoke had been unfaithful to him. He wanted nothing more than to kill them both, but something kept him from spilling their blood.
As the years passed, the Uche people struggled under the enslavement of Oti king. Isoke began to believe that maybe her son was not the person she believed him to be. Her faith in EL diminished little by little, and soon she hardened. Had she made a mistake in believing the prophecies she had grown up hearing about? Would Mkombozi come to save them or would the Uche have to take matters into their own hands?
I like the stories of the Bible. As I read, The Revelation Gate, I was reminded of those stories. There was an air of freshness in the way the story of Chimelu, the destined savior of the Uche people, was told. I enjoyed the characters, even the not-so-good ones. The only issue I had with this story was the names and the spoken language of the people whenever it was used. Otherwise, Mr. Thompson used his creative license amazingly. I recommend The Revelation Gate to readers looking for an unusual story.
