 ”Hey Mama.”

“Hey Schaelonda, what’s wrong with your face?  You look as pale as a ghost.”  Sitting down on the swing, Schae sighed.  Her mom always mentioned her appearance.

“Mama, I am as pale as a ghost.  I only have powder on my face.  It’s been years since you saw my real skin.”  Frowning, Geraldine pulled her glasses up on her nose, peering intently at her daughter.

“Child, you got freckles all over your face, just like your daddy.” Time stood still,

Schae had never been told who her dad was.

“And who would that be?”  For several minutes all could be heard were peas dropping in the pan and the sound of Julius and Jeffrey giggling as they ran around in circles.

     “That would be my business.”

“Why Mama, don’t you think at my age, I deserve to know my own father?”

“Hmmph. Why?  He didn’t want to know you.  Living in his big house with his wife and children, he thought he was doing something, giving me a hundred dollars a month.”

A lump stood in Schae’s throat but she kept quiet, not looking at her mom.  She knew she was going to hear something she’d never heard before.

     “He dead anyway…”

“Who Mama, please tell me?” Several minutes ticked by.

     “Mr.Pervis…”

Schae felt blood race to her head when she heard his name.   All the times she had gone into Pervis’ hardware, grocery or clothing stores and never knew.   He had treated her like he didn’t even know who she was, like she was just a customer.  Tears formed in her heart.  That explained her skin tone.   Her daddy had been a rich old white man, much like Tony.
