I know some of you are wondering why am I talking about Sherri Shepherd on a literary site. Well, in case you have not noticed, sometimes I just “Think Out Loud” and talk about current events, celebrity gossip, and whatever is on my mind ova here at APOOO’s Web site. Oh, and technically Shepherd fit the literary category because an article about her recently appeared in Precious Times magazine. LOL.
In the magazine, Sherri also went on to say, “Before I converted to Christianity, I was a Jehovah’s Witness. In 1993, my mother was dying from diabetic complications. My sister was heavy into drugs, and we would have to go and get her from crack houses. I was in a very physically abusive relationship. I was sleeping with a lot of guys and had more abortions than I would like to count. I had very low self-esteem and just wanted to die. I felt if someone killed me, it wouldn’t even make a difference. But God showed me that it would make a difference.”
First, I am happy that Sherri found the Lord and got her life on the right track. And, in some regards I thank her for sharing her testament. But…and you know there is a but coming. LOL. Okay, now it is one thang for Sherri to put all of her business out there, but let’s back it on up and rewind, “ My sister was heavy into drugs, and we would have to go and get her from crack houses.” Why oh why did Sherri get diarrhea of the mouth and start telling her sister’s business? I guess she said I am not my sister’s keeper and given that she could not remember how many abortions she had…I almost wonder if she felt she needed to inform others that not only did she come from a dysfunctional family…but she was not the only bad seed in the bunch…after all check out my sister.
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
Was it necessary for Sherri to tell all about herself? What about her sister? Should celebrity siblings air the family’s dirty laundry to the world?
Also, does anyone know what happened to the sister? If so, please share.
APOOO wants to know if Sherri Shepherd crossed the line? Is there anything about families/siblings that should be off limits?
Come on good peoples…think out loud with me. What say you?

You know me,. I always say you don’t need to tell everything but….. she is in the public eye, better her tell it, then someone else from the deep dark past…I guess.
Hi Dera.
You know how I feel about Sherri…and hmmm if it needed to be told her sister could have told it. But now that we all know Sherri Kisses & Tells…we definitely won’t be sharing any secrets with her…hehe.
Touchy subject… I can see Dera’s point – She felt she had to tell before someone else did. It kind of played down the fact that she was a Ho who could not remember how many abortions she had. Admitting to two wrongs still does not make it right…. confessions …. for whom!! Hmmmmm
I guess those many abortions is why she had to put almost $30,000 on her Amex for fertility treatments.
I have to agree with Dera, better her tell it her way than someone hating it their way.
I dont have a problem with it.
Linda
I don’t see anything wrong with it either. I applaud her courage.
Linda/Julia…so playing devil’s advocate…if you were the sister would you have a problem with Sherri putting your business on front street?
I don’t have a problem with her telling it either. On the one hand, if her sister is still doing drugs like that, then her sister don’t even care that she’s running off at the mouth AND alot of people probably already know. On the other, if her sister is in recovery, then SHE has already ‘had’ to put her business out there through testimony so it probably wouldn’t be that big of a deal that Sherri did it.
And Sherri’s abortions, IMO, is her business to share if she wants to. I actually think it’s a good thing in that maybe people will realize that celebrity doesn’t mean perfection, although it could also be sending a message to others that you can always have an abortion rather than taking responsibility for your actions (although to some degree, and under certain circumstances, I believe abortions are responsible actions).
Don’t flog me, it is what it is…lol
As far as celebrities airing their families dirty laundry, I think it’s okay…lol That’s only because I like reading about it.
Darnetta’s last blog post..ABC’s
Sherri seems very open about family business. Remember she did tell about her husband having an affair on live TV. This is not surprising. Do viewers have to know everything?
Hey Phyllis and thanks for sharing…I didn’t realize that.
LOL…rotflmao…you are a mess but honest.
I TOTALLY disagree with Sherri telling her and her family’s intimate business like that. Whether she is a celebrity or not, some things should be sacred. If someone else decided to put Sherri’s personal business out there, she could easily refute it or simply not comment on it and leave it at that.
Hey T.Avery…I’m feeling you…if it ain’t your business why are you telling it? I just keep thinking that if the shoe was on the other foot, how would I feel. In my situation, I would be PISSED! I tell my family don’t tell anything about me, if you don’t want me to put you on front street.
I’m sure there are things that one shouldn’t tell – I personally wouldn’t tell my siblings’ dirty laundry publicly, but I think she got caught up in the moment. I don’t think she was like, “Look, I’m messed up, but so is my sister.” That’s awfully sinister of her if she did, and I’d like to give her the benefit of the doubt. I think it was more to say that there was nothing positive at all around her, from her mother’s impending death, her sister’s addiction, and her promiscuity.
Besides, people write memoirs all the time (and I know this article is not a memoir – lol), and dirty laundry – of writer and those connected to write – is aired. Are they right for doing that?

I’on know. That’s deep. I’m all about being honest but I don’t believe people need to know every detail of your life. However, I’m not mad at her.
I’m conflicted.
It’s her life and she can choose what she says and does with her body, but sometimes when you talk about touchy subjects such as abortions you may want to be cautious of what you say. I know she wants to share but sometimes you need to self edit yourself in bringing up sexual situations.
Some people are judgmental regardless so she has to be ready to take whatever comes her way. I pray for the best for her.
I think it’s necessary to share your testimony to help others know their imperfections and faults are not there’s alone. We all sin and come short. However, I don’t know if I would have put my family’s stuff out there. Celebrities live different lives though, nothing seems to be sacred or private.
Was it necessary for Sherri to tell all about herself? I think she did it to show others that you too can comeback from a bad situation. Although personally, I wouldn’t have shared all of that information. Frankly, it’s nobody’s business as far as I’m concerned.
Dera does have a point. It’s best to tell your own dirt than let it show up in the national enquirer or better yet one of the entertainment blogs.
Sherri runs her mouth all the time…and I think at times Whoopi tries to give her signals on the air to get her to shut up.
Besides, the big conversation about that article was whatever it was she said about Barbara Walters… it was supposedly a joke that did not read right on print in the article and the next day Sherri was apologizing like a madwoman. Miss Walters was in Paris that day and Sherri called her and Walters said she was already in heaven… because she was spending a day in Paris.
I don’t have to worry about my siblings telling my business because they closed vault secretive anyway, lol! And most of the stuff they got into happened between my infancy till I was about 10…and I did not care, lo0l!
Today she is retracting some of what she said in that article. Apparently, she is getting a heck of a lot of flack from it. I didn’t see it, but it is wriiten that she came out on The View and stated that the author of the article didn’t write exactly what she said. And she was very sorry about the abortions, felt guilty blah, blah, blah.
Heres’ the thing. Its obvious that Ms. Sherrie has never been in the public eye before like she is now. She has to realize that if she is going to be in America’s face evey day then she will have to watch what she states and how she states it. She is going to be taken to task for everything. Sherrie, isn’t on Comic View or some BET “talk show” she is on a nationally televised network on a show whose viewers, I am willing to bet, don’t share similar life experiences and/or values.
She isn’t the smartest cookie in the cookie jar. She will have to learn to self censor. Its not always just but as a Black woman on a daily talk show she will have to protect herself better. And some times that means keeping private things private. If it comes out then deal with it then. Don’t volunteer controversy. I am sure she remembers what happened to Star Jones. When you let the media into your life then everything is up for ridicule.
Lisa–Sherri’s brain engaged and made her realize who signed her check and that’s she not INDISPENSABLE…can I say STARR…lol.
Raven–yep she was backtracking today. Let me see if I can find the article/statement and post the link here.
Shon–I’ll give her the benefit of the doubt…she got caught up in the moment. I hope.

I think sometimes we get too sensitive about telling “our business.” For me: if a person is comfortable exposing him/herself that’s a personal choice, as long as they feel they can take the weight of public criticism, so be it. And why complain about someone else’s self exposure anyway? How does that affect you??? God puts us through things so that our testimony can uplift others. You never know what other sister has been in Sherri Shepherd’s shoes; and might benefit from that testimony.
Hey BD…thanks for stopping by. And complaining about Sherri…nada…commenting about the fact that she decided to expose her sister as well…yep and I believe it’s wrong. I don’t care what you decide to tell about YOU…but family should be left out. But we’re talking about Sherri and no one ever said she was one of the sharpest knives in the drawer.
