In Sins of the Mother by Sandia Lowe, we are introduced to Rianne Hazelton, a successful New York attorney, who feels she has moved on with her life without regrets since leaving her husband in Accra, Ghana 10 years ago. Little does Rianne know that her life is about to unravel on many levels when she travels to her home and family in St. Croix to be the maid-of-honor in her sister’s wedding. Imagine her surprise, when she discovers the best man is her ex-husband, oil tycoon Xavier Osei. Xavier wants answers as to why his wife left him in Accra, Ghana and has been hiding from him all of these years. Will Rianne and Xavier each get the answers they want so they can stop living in the past?
The story is set in both Ghana and St Croix, and the reader is treated to learning more about the cultures of both Ghana and St. Croix. I enjoyed the description of the locations, and there is nothing like a little storm to bring out a little romance between a warring couple. To fully understand the current attitudes of Rianne and Xavier you have to understand their past relationship, but I thought the transitions from the present to the past and back again could have been a little smoother as I had to re-read a line at times to determine if it was the past or present. I also thought the emotions between Rianne and Xavier were one-dimensional as I felt the same emotions when they were fighting as when they were loving each other. There were several secondary storylines and I was hoping for a cliffhanger at the end to tease me to pick up the next book in the series. But the many secrets that keep surfacing in this story kept me reading to see how far and deep the sins would go.
Readers who enjoy reading storylines about second chance romance and family secrets will enjoy this story.
