Skipping Thanksgiving by Rambling Raven
Thanksgiving is upon us and I must admit I am not in the holiday mood this time around. Honestly, at this point I could care less about slaving in a hot kitchen, cooking food I have no business eating and later laying around like a beached whale trying to find something on the television besides football. Yeah, I know you are thinking, — what about the family “togetherness” that the holiday is supposed to bring? Well, lucky for me I communicate and interact with my family in some form or fashion on a daily basis. Therefore, skipping Thanksgiving wouldn’t really be that big of a deal for me. I would, however, have to put up with my mother and her headshaking and sighing. I am prepared for that. All I want to do this Thanksgiving is put on my favorite pair of pajamas, surround myself with all the movies, books, magazines and CDs I desperately want to catch up on.
Am I being antisocial? Perhaps, but lets be honest, Thanksgiving hasn’t been an important holiday around here in a very long time. Just check out the television commercials and the department store ads. The all go from Halloween displays straight to the Christmas ones. Retailers know that there isn’t any money in Thanksgiving so they don’t bother. About the only place you will find displays pertaining to Thanksgiving are the grocery stores. And lets be honest here, most of what we cook on that day really isn’t all that healthy for us. So I can do without all the fat, diary, salt and sugar. Not to mention all the unhealthy leftovers that will be thrust upon me at the end of the day.
Thanksgiving is only one day, and unlike Christmas you don’t even exchange gifts on that day. So, why should I celebrate it? Why can’t I stay in bed that day and rest mentally and physically? Is it really that grand of a tradition that I MUST honor it, especially with Christmas right around the corner? Am I being a totally ass or is skipping Thanksgiving ok? And if so how do I convince my family?

You know, sometimes it just be like that. At this point and time, this is how you feel. I for one look forward to Thanksgiving, and eating all that stuff. But there have been holidays when I didn’t want to be bothered and frankly the idea of staying inside, nice and warm in some jammies with some books and movies sound good.
Dera´s last blog ..Remembering To Be Thankful
I’m with Dera. I look forward to the food. I do get tired of the slaving in the kitchen because I think people expect that of me and do not appreciate it. I get the polite dinner was good, but do they really think about the work I put in?
Not sure how you are going to break it to the family. I will eat some pie for you.
