Southside Hustler by Rich McLaughlin is the story of Raymir and his crew: Scrap, Pie, Swagger and Boogie Down. They have everything the typical street hustler has, the money, the cars and the women. They have a few hustles going on, including selling drugs and robbing banks.
Raymir’s best friend, Knowledge, who went to jail protecting him under the code of the streets, steps back into the game after doing a seven-year bid. After a close friend of Knowledge’s is killed it causes Knowledge to wage a war on the streets of Wilmington and that brings the heat to the city.
Although a fast read, mainly due to the fact that the book was double spaced and only 180 pages – I read this in a couple hours, I felt that South Side Hustler lacked originality. This book is typical of many plots that many street-lit authors have written. Unfortunately, there is nothing about this book that stands out from the rest. You may think that I am being harsh but I am tired of the “typical” street-lit books. I believe that some of these new authors need to come hard or go home. We, as readers need originality. I believe that the author had plenty of room to develop more of a plot and characterization. That being said, I believe this book deserved 2 stars.
