Springing Forward by Rambling Raven

The only thing I dislike about the coming spring season is the time change. I don’t sleep as I should to begin with, so taking an hour away can be very difficult to adjust to in the beginning. However, spring is the time when we emerge from our winter hibernation. The cold weather begins to turn mild and the Earth starts to come alive. Trees start to bloom, birds begin chirping, grass begins to grow and flowers start to bloom. It is also the time in which I seem to come alive as well.

Winter is a tough season for me due to the cold, the snow and the lack of sunshine. The Earth seems dead and barren. The winter skies are mostly gray and black. It takes effort for me to get out and do things in the winter. However, spring brings a renewed sense of self. I can get out and walk about and enjoy some sun.  I can start to do things I associate with better weather. I can begin cleaning out and putting away all the old winter stuff. I can start a new exercise routine that incorporates outdoor activities. And I can begin to expand my diet with fresh fruits and vegetables by visiting local farmers’ markets.

Spring awakens my senses; I love the smell of fresh flowers in the air. I am inspired by the splashes of color that Mother Nature amuses us with. I enjoy the crisp air upon my skin. The new season allows me to shed some of those dreary winter clothes in exchange for lighter, brighter ones. My creativity comes to life as well. There is nothing more inspiring than being able to take my journal out to sit and write as the world passes me by. I even like the rain that come and goes throughout this season. The smell of fresh rain is intoxicating as are the mini-rainbows it leaves behind.

I must admit that after I get adjusted to the time change spring has some of the best nights for sleeping. I open all my bedroom windows a few inches to take in the night air and snuggle underneath the covers. The air seems to cleanse the room of all its winter heat. And there is nothing more melodic than being serenaded by the sound of birds in the tree outside my bedroom window.

Springing forward is a welcoming part of the year for me. It indicates the end of one season and the beginning of another. It indicates the continual cycle of life. It is a chance of renewal, a chance to appreciate the many wonders of nature as it beings to unfold before our very eyes.
