Strike A Pose by Djuanna Brockington

887346_my_old_camera_1I got my very first camera as a high school graduation gift.  It was a Kodak disc Instamatic.  Those were all the rage for about five minutes.  Just enough time for me to head to college and document my antics with my friends.  It was great- it fit in my pocket and went everywhere I did my freshman year.

That camera sparked my interest in photography and made me a mini-historian.  I have TONS of photo albums from the age of 18, right up until around the time my daughter turned six or seven.  And then there is a DRASTIC reduction in pictures.

I simply got too busy for picture taking.

While I was missing out, The Girl was beginning her love affair with the camera.  She got her first camera at the age of 11 (digital, of course- thanks to The Ex) and she has since taken A LOT of pictures (mostly of herself, but sometimes including a family member or friend).  Over the last year or so, I’ve noticed that she rarely leaves home without it.

I got nostalgic for the days when I used to do the same thing, so I bought myself a new camera for Christmas and took it on vacation and fell in love with photography all over again.  To the point that I have joined a local photography group (I know! I’m so excited).

I now find myself dropping my camera in purse on my way out the door. Just like The Girl.

And that is how I ended up taking pics with the girls at lunch yesterday. We were celebrating my birthday (the same as the last five years) but this time I had my camera at the ready and got some fun shots of us (with a little help from the wait staff for the group pic).  I don’t know what excited me more- laughs and food with the friends or the pics that I couldn’t wait to get home and upload.  Either way, I had a great time.

Do you currently take lots of pics?  If so, what kind of camera do you use? (I’ve got a Nikon S52 that is way cool.)

Strike a pose this weekend APOOO,  and then email a pic to all your friends.  You’ll have fun just trying to get the perfect shot.

  1. Happy Belated Birthday! I’m too fond of pictures being taken of me. I do like taking random pictures of things and other people. Now that I have my sisterlocks I may start taking more pictures of myself, because I noticed I don’t really have many when I had my traditional locks.

  2. Thanks Jennifer- and by the way, what’s the difference between sister locks and traditional locks? I have no clue. Haven’t changed from various bobs since college, so I apologize

  3. It is funny your writing about this as I dont have a camera. I was looking at one to put on my Staples charge but now Im afraid since I may not have a job LOL Im also trying to figure out a low cost camera that takes good pics. My rommie takes good pics but says she needs “zoom”. So she is recommending a 10 pixel? 9 something else..sigh I have no idea. I do know Staples has a Kodac share something or other on sale for 100.00

  4. Hey, invite Linda to join you at the next Photography Group (http://photo.meetup.com/687) meeting and she could ask us for ideas and suggestions on the perfect camera for her. We rnjoy doing this. LOL.

Like you, I carry my Canon SD850 with me all the time. I gave up lots of “professional” options to have one about the size of a pack of cigarettes. It DOES have a 4x Optical zoom so I agree that’s a good feature…if you’re steady.

    See you at the meeting.

  5. I didn’t think people still carried camera, with all the camera phones around. It is nice to know that the art of photography isn’t lost. I love beautiful pictures that depict scenary and wild life.

  6. I wanted to be like my Godfather growing up and be a photographer. I loved to watch him devlop the film. It was the best thing in the world to watch the picture I took come to life on paper. I need to buy a new digital camera now. I at one point had so many photos. I need to get back into that habit. I had pistures of my life milestones and I want to make sure my kids have that too.

  7. You know what I LOVE ABOUT this segment/blog/post? The fact that it always seems to take me BACK DOWN MEMORY LANE.

While I was in middle school & high school my clique and I, (yes I said clique) used to all always have cameras. What were they 110 cameras? Oh and the Polaroid ones. I mean we’re in front of the club, snapping pics, out to eat, snapping pics, in the mall, snapping pics. I can hardly recall a time we didn’t catch someone doing something that would keep us laughing for hours. Then off to Walgreen’s to get the film developed with multiple prints so all of us could have our own sets. Or to stock up on Polaroid film.

Now that I’m older, I think that I forgot the joy to just pull out your camera and capture something you want to recall. My oldest has pictures of him doing any and everything and the younger two barely have photos with the exceptions of the crazy ones the school take and my every so often pull out the camera phone ones. I think I’ll pull out my digital camera, dust it off and snap some photos. Shoot with all the text messages I send maybe I’ll start a photo chain of messages. Hey maybe it’s time to UPGRADE my digital camera. hmmm… I do like the camera that Ashton is always advertising. Any suggestions???

Thanks again Djuanna, OH—- HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY D-I-V-A… HAPPY BIRTHDAY DI-V-A…. HAPPY BIRTHDAY D-I-V-A !!!

  8. I got my first “real” camera when I went to Cuba a year ago, a Canon, oh boy, it is not in my reach so I don’t have the model, 450?, I don’t know. Anyway, I always used thos disposable cameras but I wanted to document this trip and I love the camera.

  9. @Linda- I’m partial to Kodaks for folks who are just starting out. They make things really simple and easy to use. My daughter’s first cameras (she’s had several by now) were Kodaks. You can find a pretty decent model for less than 100 bucks just about anywhere- Target, Walmart, Kmart, and any of the office supply places.

@Chuck- hey Chuck, see you in a couple of weeks! And Linda lives too far to be able to join us. :-( Too bad.

@Raven- I have a camera on my Blackberry, but the difference between 3mp and 9mp is huge on picture quality. My pics on my Blackberry look like they’ve been taken with a phone.

@Lashonda- like you I have plenty of pics from my youth. And my family loves pulling out the old albums every now and then. It’s also a great way to remember those who have crossed over. There is a pic of my grandfather sitting on the sofa smoking his pipe while I run through the living room butt naked ( I was about 4 or 5) that I just love. I’m the oldest grandchild on my mother’s side of the family and I got away with murder. All of those happy memories come flooding back when I see that pic.

@Nardsbaby- break that camera out girl! We’re never to old to take pics with our clique. Strike a pose Diva! I guarantee y’all will be laughing so hard at your silly antics and with great pics to document it all. Although if you guys are like me and my friends, someone will invariably complain about how they look in one or all pics. LOL. That’s usually me. And thanks for the B-day wishes.

@Dera- I love Canons. And I saw a few of your pics on your blog- they were pretty good. When I hit Italy later this year I am going to be a snapping fool. LOL

  10. Djuanna, traditional locks are palm rolled. They also put stuff like shea butter, or gel in it. Sisterlocks are interwoven; which means they start at the end and work up toward the roots. So you will walk away with the look of your locks the same day you have them installed. The traditional locks you have to wait for months before they look like locks.

  11. Thanks Jennifer. I get that. Cool. So show us what your locks look like today. :-)

  12. I have LOTS of pictures from growing up. My friends and I always had cameras around. I always take my camera when I’m hanging out with the girls. I have an olympus digital camera – its okay. Wish it took better pictures in the dark. In HS my gf took photography. I use to hang out with her in the darkroom while she developed the pictures.

  13. I just had to come back to let all of you know I went and got me a new camera. My favorite cousin and I were riding, laughing and talking and I slipped my Canon Powershot out and she fell out laughing. You remember the old school club poses! We jumped out the car to pose and had people on the streets jumping in the photos with us!

    Thanks Djuanna!

  14. Hey Nardsbaby! Glad to hear you got a camera. It sounds like you had a blast with your cousin. And that’s what it’s all about. You’ll have to share some of the pics with us.
