In keeping with APOOO’s September Theme of Head of the Class, today’s Thursday Thirteen goes back into time to celebrate my childhood. Oh yeah…I had a birthday this month…the big 5-0…hehe…so this month I will also be comparing and contrasting my 60s childhood to my daughter’s childhood. Today, I am spotlighting favorite childhood school playground activities. Daughter is a teen now…but it’s fairly easy to remember what happened three years ago compared to what happened 40 years ago…lol. Anyway, the more things change the more they stay the same. Daughter and I were able to come up with 13 playground activities that we both enjoy. So, while I might be 37 years older than daughter…it’s funny how things have not really changed that much when it comes to KIDS JUST WANNA HAVE FUN!
Check out daughter and my FAVORITE CHILDHOOD PLAYGROUND ACTIVITIES list.
- Tag (Daughter also has Freeze Tag…how many of you know what that is…lol)
- Hide and Seek
- Basketball
- Dodge Ball
- Kick Ball (Daughter also has soccer…soccer wasn’t popular when I was a kid)
- Red Rover
- Swings–We both look trying to see how high we can soar!
- Hanging From the Monkey Bars
- Duck, Duck, Goose
- Four-Square
- Double Dutch
- See-Saw
- Hop Scotch

Hey, what about tetherball! LOL. You know double-dutch wasn’t on the West Coast until my daughter was in school. Great list.

I remember all these games and my most favorite one was:
Hide and Seek
I am 32 and my daughter is 10 and we play this game alot in the house…….she loves it and it brings back memories of when me and my cousin’s would play, I would hide so good that I would fall asleep in my hiding spot because they could never find me – THanks for posting this……..I love going down memory lane
Hey, I played freeze tag as a kid and I’m WAY older than your daughter (smile). These days, I’m just happy to hear about a child who enjoys playing outside period.
I loved to play four-square and to swing. Happy 50th! I’m right behind you on that…

I loved all those games. My daughter loved hopscotch when she was younger. Now, with the boys, it’s all about football, basketball, and soccer. Surprisingly, they LOVE horse shoes! I know you played that right? And Happy B-Day (again…lol)

What? No Jacks? I am still the jacks champion in my hood.
And what about the hoola hoop, we had a contest at the church picnic this year.
Oh and we also use to have bolo bat competitions, and what about those klick klack things, and the yo-yo.
Girl you are making me remember some fun times. My cousin Kenny Leon who some of you may know of, I guess was destined to be a Director/Producer because our families use to get together on the weekends and Kenny would organize us kids and we would put on talent shows for our parents. Those were the days.
Great list. The only game I didn’t recognize is Four-Sqaure. Me and the girls TRY to jump double dutch – it isn’t pretty
I loved double-dutch. I could turn around in the rope, cross my feet and jump for long periods of time. My daughters grew up in the burbs, and the girls here didn’t jump double-dutch. One holiday my sisters came my house and we taught my daughter how to turn and jump, and she carried on her mother’s tradition. It was truly fun. I was pretty good playing jacks too!
Wonderful, wonderful list! I had so much fun with most of those games growing up. I remember when Red Rover wasn’t allowed anymore because too many kids were getting hurt!
The children I teach still love Hop Scotch, Duck, Duck, Goose, Tag, and Kickball & Basketball, in addition to football and soccer— and of course, just plain old running around. We often catch them playing “dog” and “Cat” LOL!
Freeze tag was much more fun than regula tag. I enjoyed all those playground fun things to do also. We also played touch football, jacks, and running bases.
I love watching double dutch jumproping, but me and my uncoordinated self just couldn’t get the hang of it.
Remember playing “Red Light” one of my favorites… Hop Scotch…. Four Squares …..
I loved jumping rope, but I never could get coordinated enough for double dutch. Duck, Duck, Goose was a big one, and my favorite was foursquare. I never liked the swings much, I have a messed up middle ear, and to this day, get motion sick at the drop of a hat. Great TT

Freeze tag is much better than regular tag. Better yet is animal freeze tag where you have to pretend to be an animal if you get got. My ds liked dodge ball. I thought it was a torture device designed to let the teachers get me without looking like they were after me.

I love the list. I used to love to ply I Spy..Until my counsin fell off of a stool trying to show us what he was talking about and we all got in trouble for being in the kitchen…red rover was a favorite as well. I am a Jersey girl but I loved my summers in SouthCarolina.
Sure, I played Freeze Tag when I was a kid. Happy belated TT.
