Pearl Cleage takes the reader back to the West End, an enclave in the Atlanta area, in her latest novel, Just Wanna Testify. The West End area is controlled by Blue Hamilton, the blue-eyed, former singer and current Godfather of the area. Blue gets a visit from Serena, the leader of a group of five extremely tall, thin and beautiful models, known as the Too Fine Five. Serena knows that game recognizes game and that Blue knows who and what they are. Serena lets him know they are there for an Essence magazine photo shoot. With the help of other West End residents, namely Abbie and Peachy, they research the reason why these mysterious women are invading their world.

Blue soon gets a visit from five young men who are about to graduate from Morehouse College. They come to Blue for help because it appears they signed a contract with these women. Now that it is time to pay up, they want to renege on their promise. To their advantage there is a clause in the contract that would give them an out, get one woman to testify as to their good moral character. Try as they might, they cannot find one, not even the women who they named four years earlier as character references. Blue offers himself as a substitute for the boys, if he cannot make the women feel some type of affection or love after his performance at an upcoming party.

As always within Ms Cleage’s books is a lesson. In this one, the five young men sought to live the good life without thinking of the consequences until it was time to pay the piper. The book was an enjoyable read for me, and if you like the stories revolving around the West End and its residents, you will enjoy Just Wanna Testify.
