- A Heart of Devotion
Which book did you find the hardest to birth?
I think my first novel, A Heart of Devotion, was the most intimidating. With your first manuscript, it’s almost like you need an extra boost of confidence to prove that you can actually complete an entire novel. After you’ve written one, the others come easier.
Which book is your current favorite?
Shame on you! That’s like asking which of your children is your favorite child! You love them equally but differently based on the joys and blessings they bring to your life. But currently I’ve doting all over for my upcoming release, The Last Woman Standing. It’s like the newborn to the family so right now it’s getting most of my attention.
How would you describe your writing style?
I tend to write books that touch the hearts of women. They’re light-hearted, but they can still make you think because they’re doused with so much reality – not from my life – but from the lives of any woman you see walking down the street. I also tend to think I have a good sense of humor so there’s always a funny scene or two in my books…or at least something that a character will say that’s going to make the reader laugh out loud.
Do you listen to music while you write? If so, what kind?
Not all of the time because I end up doing more singing that writing. And just so you know, singing is NOT my forte. But I’ve found that I tend to write to the pace of the music – if it’s a slow kind of ballad CD, then I write slow. If it’s faster, like praise music, my fingers are running across that keyboard like it’s a piano. But when I do listen to music when writing, I enjoy Donald Lawrence, Kirk Franklin, Mary Mary, Fred Hammond or Israel Houghton.
Tell us anything about you as a writer that you think might be interesting or unusual.
Hmmm? That’s a good question and you stumped me on that one. If you asked me about Tia “as a person,” that might be one thing. But as “a writer,” I think I’m pretty normal (laughing).
What advice do you have for aspiring writers?
My advice to aspiring writers it to keep writing until you get to the end of the book. Don’t look back. Don’t go back and edit. Finish a complete manuscript first, and then work on making it your best. I’ve seen so many get stalled with “analysis paralysis,” meaning they spend so much time trying to perfect the only five pages that they’ve written, that they never write past that point.
Writers are often encouraged to write what they know. Have you found that to be the case with your writing?
Somewhat. I think there’s a small part of “me” in each of my books, but unless you’re a close friend of mine, you wouldn’t know what that particular thing was.
Lynette Bowers had no intention on falling in love with her ex-husband, “Ace” Bowers. After all, it has been ten years since their marriage ended, and two years since the beginning of his relationship with the younger and prettier, Sheila Rushmore. Besides Sheila, everyone knows that only a fool makes the same mistake twice, especially when it comes to marriage.
Ace seems stuck between his past and his future. With his conflicting emotions, he risks losing two women who hold a significant place in his heart. It’s going to take his faith and God’s love to handle the ensuing drama.
Sheila is starting to see Ace’s ex-wife as a threat to her lifelong dreams of achieving the happily-ever-after. Sheila is used to getting what she wants – except Ace’s commitment to marriage. When Sheila realizes Lynette may be the cause, she launches a plan to play the hand of God, instead of allowing Him to bring the love all three of them desire.
